Junk Food Dinner Podcast: Episode #12

Call your friends! Wake the neighbors! Episode #12 of everybody's favorite cult movie podcast Junk Food Dinner is here!

This week, we take a look at a slew of post-Gremlins, monster puppet creature features. First, we see what happens when a small town family is terrorized by a batch of rolly-polly, quill shooting aliens in 1986’s Critters. Then things get goofy as a group of jive-talking, trouble-making creatures wreak havoc on California in Munchies from 1987. And finally, the infamous toilet-dwelling demons are back and invade a traveling carnival in 1988’s Ghoulies II.

Also, we have Nerd News, this week's DVD releases and much more!

When LARPing gets real...

After the post I made about an upcoming movie about LARPers, our buddy DJ pointed out that live-action role playing films have already been made and linked me to this trailer:

The movie came out in 2009 and looks great!! I can't wait to see it!

CageFlix.

A midnight screening of "Raising Arizona" last night has prompted me to point out this. Now, with the click of a button, you can add all 49 available (DVD only, no Instant Watch) Nicolas Cage movies to your Netflix queue. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

CGSociety.org's B-Movie Challenge

The fine folks over at CGSociety.org are known for putting together cool little contests that call out to the best of the digital artistic community to create computer-generated pieces based on a certain theme.

Recently, the website held a contest with a theme near and dear to Junk Food Dinner's heart, B-Movies!

The contest asked for submissions based on "the theme of those shlock-horror pictures on drive in theater screens".

Needless to say, CGSociety received a lot of great b-movie themed submissions from digital artists across the globe. The winners and runners-up are all on display over at CGSociety.org, so go check 'em out!

Finally, LARPing comes to the big screen!

Apparently, there's a moving about Live-Action Role Playing coming out. But, beyond that, it's a film about Live-Action Role Players that accidentally summon a demon. Just on this, I'm pretty interested in the film, which is titled "Knights of Badassdom." The film will star Summer Glau from "Serenity," "Community's" Danny Pudi, Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn. What a cool cast! I'll be following this one closely. Very closely.

Cropsey/The Burning.

A few episodes ago, we reviewed the 1981 summer camp slasher flick "The Burning." In the film, horny teens are killed off by the bloodthirsty Cropsey. During the episode we mentioned that the character of Cropsey was based on urban legends from the NJ/upstate NY area. Now, here's a trailer for the new documentary called, simply, "Cropsey." Check it out below. Personally, I think this looks pretty interesting. I know it's playing in NY, hopefully it'll make it's way here to Capital City.

(Sorry, superfans! That only looks like Parker in the trailer.)

Also, here's a review from Fangoria.

What do you think?

UPDATE: It looks like this guy will be making it's way to Bustown after all!

McLovin, the 29 year old Hawaiin vampire killer

Word on the interwebs is that McLovin (sometimes referred to as Christopher Mintz-Plasse) will be playing William Ragsdale's role in the "Fright Night" remake. That might be okay. I mean, I love William Ragsdale in the original. But McLovin is pretty okay. He was on a recent episode of "Party Down" and held his own. And he was in Kick-Ass, which the kids seem to like.

What's lame about this remake, though, aside from the fact that it exists, is the fact that Colin Farell is playing the vampire and that some young dude I never heard of will be playing Roddy McDowell's part of the old, has-been movie host turned vampire hunter. Meh.

But, chances are the vampires in this film won't shimmer in daylight, so I'll probably end up seeing it.

TONIGHT!

Tonight we record the landmark 10th episode of the 69th best podcast on Podcast Alley.
My pick for the week was "Truth or Dare: A Critical Madness" and the following is the short that inspired the trilogy (!). I've been waiting with bated breath to hear what Kevin and Parker thought of this little masterpiece. Enjoy!

High hopes.

So, I'm gonna try and go see "Splice" today/tonight and I'm hoping it doesn't turn out like this.

Save Columbus.

Loyal listeners, Capital City needs your help.

We've had a rough week here in Columbus. Last week, Wednesday to be exact, Columbus lost one of it's finest. Robert Lawson, my dear friend of over 13 years, died in a tragic accident. A hard blow to a town who loved him, and a loss that will be felt for a long time. An active member in a lot of things that make Columbus great, Robert's sense of community was unparalleled. Yesterday, we attended a service to celebrate his life.

One of the things closest to Robert's heart was Camp Sunrise. It's a camp devoted to kids impacted by HIV/AIDS. He was a camp counselor for many years and then served on the board. Robert's mother is asking for donations to be made to camp. I also work for this organization and can say it's one the most, if not the most, amazing things I've ever been a part of.

Donations can be made here.

In a seemingly impossible twist, a mere 24 hours later, Columbus suffered another tragedy. While driving home, local favorite, Alix Reece was shot in the neck by a stray bullet. She was taken to Grant Medical Center and remained in critical care for a few days. She is paralyzed from the neck down and is still in the hospital battling complications from her injuries.

Alix is an amazing woman, who I was proud to fight along side of in our D&D campaigns. She is intelligent, engaging, beautiful, and the last person something like this should have happened to. Friends and family have already put together multiple benefits and ways to donate for her steps towards recovery.

I know things are tough for everyone, but little bits add up and these are both people and causes I feel are worthy. Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated by me and the friends and family of these two wonderful people.

Donations for Alix are here.

Also, proceeds from this sale go to Alix and I know you nerds are into this. But you'd better act fast!

Thanks, and I promise I won't put serious stuff up here anymore. Starting now.

Junk Food Dinner Podcast: Episode #9

We're back, weirdos! Episode #9 of the Junk Food Dinner Podcast is finally here! This week Kevin, Mark and Parker raise hell with a gang undead British bikers in 1973's "cycle-delic" freak-out Psychomania! Then we battle not one, not two, but twelve(!) mutant killers in the 1986 cheesy horror romp Neon Maniacs and finally we're terrorized by a garden shear wielding murderer in the often overlooked, but highly entertaining, star-studded summer camp slasher flick The Burning from 1981, one of the first films ever released by Miramax.

Also, we have Nerd News, this week's DVD releases and much more!
