Junk Food Dinner Podcast: Episode #32

All things move towards their end, as Shlocktober comes to a close with our Halloween Extravaganza. We start off waxing nostalgic about the good ol' days and then dive right in. This week, we welcome Faith Von Awesome to chime in along the way as we discuss our Halloween picks.

We kick things off with the 1978 slasher that started it all- John Carpenter's "Halloween."

Next up- we learn you can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose- unless you happen to be the title character from the 2002 giallo-esque "May."

Finally, Halloween comes full circle in an anthology set in the heart of it all- 2009's "Trick r' Treat."

No Nerd News or DVD Releases on this one, but check out #31, if you can't get enough.

  1. Creepshow, Tales From The Darkside: The Movie...the best horror anthology movies? Really? The TFTDS Movie was kind of weak (I've seen better episodes of the show), except for that last great gargoyle story. Have you seen: From Beyond The Grave (1973), Tales From The Crypt (1972), The Vault Of Horror (1973), The Monster Club (1980), CreepTales (198?), Nightmares (1983), Dead Of Night (1945), Torture Garden (1967), Tales That Witness Madness (1973), Asylum (1972), The House That Dripped Blood (1971), Kwaidan (1964), Tales From The Hood (1995), etc? You could do a bunch of shows just on horror anthology movies, and several just on Amicus ones alone. I'd love to hear a Monster Club/CreepTales/Nightmares or From Beyond The Grave/Tales From The Crypt/Vault Of Horror show.

  3. Michael,

First of all, thanks for listening and sending us some feedback.

While I (Mark) would agree with you that TFTDS:TM isn't a perfect film, it's one that I saw as a youth and stuck with me. Creepshow reigns supreme for me, though.

As far as that list of anthologies in your first comment, I'm not familiar with a good handful of them. I do love the original TFTC/VoH and Tales from the Hood also rules. I haven't seen The House That Dripped Blood in a long time, maybe I'll revisit my VHS copy (good cover!). I've seen Asylum and though there are decent effects, I thought it was pretty boring. I liked the stories, just not the execution.

I would put The Offspring/From a Whisper to a Scream (87) on there as well.

The others, I will set about finding as they are relevant to my interests.

How about Dark Night of the Scarecrow?

Thanks again for checking us out, if you want to suggest anything or talk more about movies please don't hesitate to hit us up at JFDpodcast@gmail.com

  4. I've been wanting to do Spaced Invaders on the show for a while! Good call, Michael!

  5. You should totally do SPACED INVADERS at some point! It deserves more attention, as does his other film: WHEN GOOD GHOULS GO BAD (2001). I absolutely love both of these films; Patrick Read Johnson is like the old, new Joe Dante! I still vividly remember the Mars candy bar tie-in commercials that featured the Spaced Invaders aliens and aired around that Halloween.

And I knew I'd forget some good stuff. Add on TRICK OR TREAT (1986) and THE MIDNIGHT HOUR (1985 TV) to my Halloween movies list (although THE MIDNIGHT HOUR might be somewhere closer to the bottom), and DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS (1965) to the horror anthologies.

  6. Spaced Invaders is great. I used to make my dad rent it for me like every weekend. That and Labyrinth. I havent seen it since then, though, sadly. A viewing is probably in order.

I haven't heard of those other flicks, though. I'm not much for anthologies, usually. I got stuck on the Tales from the Darkside movie as a youngster and cling to that wholeheartedly, though.

Aside from that dumb story about the cat.

  7. WOW! Guys! THANKS SO MUCH for the kind words about Spaced Invaders (AND When Good Ghouls Go Bad!)

    Best wishes,

    Patrick Read Johnson
