JFD606: Departure, Hello, Rain, Black Mirror: Striking Vipers

We're black to the future yet again this week with a trio of Afrofuturist short films!

Up first! It's 2017's The Departure - a short film about an alien couple hiding inside human bodies on Earth while being stalked by a man not very familiar with the workings of cell phones. Or at least that's what Sean noticed about it.

Next up! Oh no, Sean's gone Nigerian again? Don't worry, the PBS-affiliated Hello, Rain (from 2018) is nothing like Beach 24. Well, unless you loved Beach 24. Then they're very similar. It's got killer kaiju ladies in wild, colorful wigs!

Finally! Of course, it's 2019's Black Mirror: Striking Vipers, the first episode of the fifth season of the streaming television show - you know, the one where Parker made us watch gay VR.

All this plus the joy of watching an old man get kicked in the nuts, old-fashioned jackassery, Kevin regrets defending a woman, mild Skype audio artifacting, a tribute to the man who paved the way for Meatballs 4, three old men get everything wrong about the Sonic the Hedgehog mythos, 90s ringtones, bonafide players in the Nollywood film scene, paid endorsements from our proud sponsors, nerd news and even more! Recorded live-to-tape on National Hippo Day, 2022!!
